R-04 Fennberg Lake

Tour Description:

This road bike route is a true classic in South Tyrol’s southern lowlands – with a steady climb, quiet roads, and a rewarding destination: the Fennberg Lake, situated at over 1,000 m elevation.

From Tramin, the ride begins with a gentle warm-up before heading through Kurtatsch into the climb toward Oberfennberg. The road winds through dense forests and scattered farms in a series of tight switchbacks. Some sections are steep, with gradients in the double digits, but the surface is consistently smooth and paved. After reaching Fennhals, the grade eases and the route continues across a scenic high plateau toward Underfennberg.

Once at Fennberg Lake, you’ll find the perfect spot for a break – whether it’s for a picnic or simply to take in the stillness of the forest surroundings. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also go for a refreshing swim in the lake.

The return follows the same route downhill – full of curves, open views, and flowing lines. Back in Margreid, the final section to Tramin leads along quiet side roads, perfect for winding down the ride.

Recommended Equipment:

Road bike with climbing gears, helmet, sunglasses, water bottle, and optionally a small lock if planning a longer break at the lake. Good brakes are essential for the descent.

Highlights and Tips:

  • The ascent to Fennberg is a hidden gem – narrow, peaceful, and surrounded by natural beauty.
  • The Fennberg Lake is ideal for enjoying a packed snack in the countryside. There is also a place to stop for a meal at the “Zur Kirche” inn (closed on Mondays). Please check the opening hours in advance.
  • Ideal conditions: cool mornings or clear autumn days.
  • Optional detour: After the descent, extend the ride via Kurtatsch or Entiklar for additional variety.
