M-15 Grauner–Fenner Joch

Crossing Borders, Gaining Altitude

Tour description:

This demanding round tour is a true classic for experienced mountain bikers in the Tramin area – with long climbs, alpine landscapes, and rewarding trail segments around the Fenner Joch (1,563 m). It takes stamina and solid skills, but the views and trail flow make it more than worthwhile.

Starting in Tramin, the route climbs toward Söll and continues along a forested ridge above the Kalterer See. A scenic panoramic trail leads to the remote hamlet of Graun, where the real effort begins: the Jochweg climbs steadily through tight switchbacks to the Grauner Joch, the historic pass into Trentino.

From there, the trail becomes a true alpine experience: narrow but rideable paths wind through the Schönleiten protected area, across open meadows and woodlands with the Brenta mountain range always in view. This high ridge route leads to the quiet Fenner Joch (1,563 m) – a peaceful mountain saddle with far-reaching southern views.

The descent is a highlight in itself: natural singletrails, gravel roads and forest paths lead down to Penon, then on to Kurtatsch, before gently returning to Tramin. This tour delivers everything: elevation, scenery, solitude, and real mountainbike adventure.

Recommended equipment:

This tour requires a full-suspension MTB or E-MTB with a long battery range. A helmet, gloves, and protective gear are strongly recommended. Bring at least 2 liters of water and some snacks, as there are no refreshment stops along the way. A GPS track is essential, especially in the upper sections where navigation can be tricky. The route should only be attempted in dry conditions.

Highlights and tips:

  • Grauner Joch and Fenner Joch – historic mountain passes in untouched terrain
  • Panoramic views of the Brenta range, Dolomites, and Überetsch Valley

  • Wild alpine sections through the Schönleiten protected area
  • Best season: July to October
