M-11 Panoramic tour

Altenburg–Graun via Lake Kaltern

Tour description:

This mountain bike tour offers a charming combination of high-altitude trails, viewpoints, and typical South Tyrolean cultural landscape. Starting in Tramin, the route first heads towards Kaltern and then continues up to Altenburg, a small village above Lake Kaltern. A first stop here is worthwhile: The St. Vigil Church and the panoramic plaza next to it offer spectacular views of the lake and the wine-growing village of Kaltern below.

The route then follows the Friedensweg, a scenic forest path that runs above the lake. After a short descent, the climb begins to Graun, the highest district of Kurtatsch. Reaching an elevation of approximately 1,100 meters, you can enjoy absolute peace and a traditional village atmosphere.

A special tip: Before the descent, you should take a short detour to the Sitzkofel – a scenic rocky outcrop above Graun. From here, you have a 360-degree view of the Etschtal Valley, Tramin, Lake Kaltern, and the mountains surrounding the Mendel Pass. The Sitzkofel is just a few minutes from the trail and is a perfect photo spot or rest stop.

The return journey leads towards Penon down into the valley. Those with surefootedness can take an easier trail here, or alternatively, a well-maintained forest road leads through the vineyards near Rungg back to Tramin.

Recommended equipment:

A mountain bike with gears for the steeper sections, a helmet, gloves, enough water for the elevation gain, and protective gear if taking the trail option. In hot weather, an early start is recommended, as the climb to Graun is south-facing.

Highlights and tips:

  • From the church square in Altenburg, you have one of the most beautiful views of Lake Kaltern.
  • The Sitzkofel is a real insider tip – a quiet resting place with a panoramic view.
  • In Graun, a true mountain village atmosphere awaits – the Lenzenhof farm is a great place to stop for a bite to eat.
  • The route runs mostly on forest and gravel paths, making it technically easy to manage.
  • The tour is particularly attractive in spring and autumn, when the forests are awash with color and the views are particularly clear.
