Tour Description:
This sporty road bike tour starts in Tramin and follows a panoramic loop over Bolzano to Kohlern (Colle) – the quiet mountaintop village above the city. The route combines sunny approach roads, a genuine mountain climb, and a flowing return ride through wine villages.
From Tramin, you ride along the Adige Valley via Pfatten to the southern edge of Bolzano. The city crossing is quick, as the entrance to the legendary Kohlern Road soon follows: a fully paved mountain road with over 20 switchbacks and gradients reaching 10%, climbing steadily up to about 1,100 m.
At the top, where the historic funicular ends, you’re rewarded with a wide view over the Bolzano basin. Those who wish can enjoy a break at a local inn, or continue along the forest road and then descend into the valley – passing through Seit/Hofstatt, then Steinmannwald, to Laives, and from there via Branzoll, Ora, and Neumarkt back to Tramin – ideal for a relaxed cooldown.
Recommended Equipment:
Road bike with appropriate gearing for climbs, helmet, sunglasses, water bottle, lightweight clothing for the ascent, wind jacket for the descent, functioning brakes.
