R-01 From Tramin to the Mendel Pass

The Classic for Road Cyclists

Tour Description

The ascent to the Mendel Pass from Tramin is one of the highlights for passionate road cyclists. The route initially leads through the idyllic vineyards of the South Tyrolean lowlands, passing through the charming town of Kaltern. Then begins the steady climb over 14 well-maintained hairpin bends with a moderate gradient of about 6 to 7 percent. Spectacular views of Lake Kaltern and the Etsch Valley open up repeatedly throughout the ride. Thanks to the even gradient, a calm, steady pace can be maintained all the way to the top of the pass at 1,363 meters.

Tipps:

  • Start early: To avoid traffic and take advantage of the cooler morning hours.
  • Car-Free Cycling Day: In September, a Car-Free Cycling Day takes place on the Mendola Pass – a special experience!
  • Food and Drink: Bring plenty of water and snacks, as refreshment stops along the route are limited.
  • Prefer weekdays: Lots of motorcycles on the road on weekends. Weekdays are much quieter and more relaxed.
  • Be honest with yourself: If you’re not in good shape, it’ll be tough. If you prefer a more leisurely pace, take the Mendel funicular and enjoy an easy tour at the top.

Highlights along the route

  • Lake Caldaro: One of the warmest bathing lakes in the Alps, ideal for a short rest.
  • Mendel Pass: Historic Alpine pass with spectacular views and places to stop for refreshments.
