The Fennberg Via Ferrata is one of the most impressive via ferratas in the southern part of the Etschtal Valley. The route leads from Magrè up to Unterfennberg along steep rock faces, via ladders, secured steps, and partially exposed traverses – always accompanied by sweeping views over the slopes of the Wine Route and the valley below.
This tour is particularly recommended in spring, with its splendid flowers, and in autumn during the grape harvest. Thanks to its southeastern exposure, the weather here is often ideal for mountain climbing – although it can get very hot in the summer months. An early start is therefore recommended.
What makes this via ferrata special
The trail runs through varied terrain and offers exciting passages that require surefootedness, a head for heights, and some via ferrata experience. The entry is striking: a roughly ten-meter-high rock chimney, protected by clamps, presents the first challenge. Narrow paths then alternate with steep, secured sections. Three long ladders, numerous wire ropes, and an overhang provide additional excitement.
Between the climbing sections, there are always quieter sections—for example, on a bush terrace or in walking terrain—that offer time to catch your breath and enjoy the scenery. The final part of the trail leads through a sparse mixed forest to Unterfennberg, where a magnificent view of the Etschtal valley awaits.
Tour information at a glance
The via ferrata covers a climbing distance of approximately 750 meters and a total elevation gain of around 1,000 meters. You should allow approximately 2.5 hours for the actual climbing time; the total time, including the approach and descent, is approximately 5.5 hours. The safety equipment is well-protected, so you can rely on sturdy wire ropes, clamps, and ladders. The route faces southeast, which usually ensures sunny and pleasant mountain weather.
Approach and Descent
The approach starts in the center of Magrè on the Wine Road. From there, you’ll first climb a short distance before hiking south through the vineyards on side roads and farm tracks. After about an hour, you’ll reach the edge of the terrain where the via ferrata entrance is signposted.
The descent leads from the via ferrata exit down a marked path to Pichl. From there, you’ll hike back to Magrè on paved paths. Alternatively, you can take the old Fennbergweg (trail no. 3), a steep but particularly scenic gravel path that also leads back to Magrè.
Arrival and Parking
Take the A22 motorway to the Neumarkt-Auer exit. From there, it’s approximately five kilometers along State Road 16 to Magrè an der Weinstraße (241 m). Several parking options are available in the village. If you’re traveling by public transport, you can take the train to Auer and from there continue by bus to Magrè an der Weinstraße.
