On the way between forest, play and panorama

A path for the whole family – discover, play, enjoy!

Welcome to the Kastelaz Family Path – a varied hike through deciduous and mixed forest, with wonderful views of the South Tyrolean lowlands. The play stations newly built in 2024 make the Kastelaz Path a popular destination for families with children – here nature, movement, and fun connect in an ideal way.

Whether in spring with the first warm sun rays or in autumn with the colorful play of the forests – this family-friendly path is a beautiful experience in every season.

On a comfortable forest path, the route leads from Tramin to Kurtatsch – with exciting play stations and resting places. The return route via Rungg offers a particularly beautiful panorama and perfectly rounds off the excursion.

Route description

From the town hall square in Tramin, you go via Schneckenthaler Street towards the St. Anna retirement home. Right after that, the marked Kastelaz Path branches off to the left — here the actual hiking trail begins.

After a short ascent, a wide forest path leads through bright mixed forest towards Kurtatsch. Along the way, several benches invite you to rest — always with a view of the Adige Valley and the surrounding vineyards. Those who want can make a small detour at the beginning to the Romanesque St. Jacob’s Church with its famous frescoes.

In 2024, the path was supplemented with five new play stations — including a slide, a wooden snake for balancing, a swing, a climbing igloo, and a zip line at the “Bödala” rest area. The Kastelaz Path is therefore ideal for children who also want to play on the way.

The return path leads over the little-trafficked panoramic road via Rungg back to Tramin. Here too, wonderful views await and, if needed, a cozy stop.

Stories & drawings by the children

In the 2024/25 school year, the 5th grade pupils of Kurtatsch Primary School and class 5B of Tramin Primary School created their own legends and imaginative drawings. Inspired by the Hexenbichl in Tramin, the Hexenstein in Kurtatsch, and the five play stations, they produced a colorful booklet full of exciting, mystical, and original stories that bring new magic to the Kastelaz Family Path.

The booklet can be downloaded and invites families to immerse themselves in the world of legends along the way while enjoying the play stations.

Children are also encouraged to get creative themselves: they can write their own stories, illustrate them, and hand them in at the Tramin Tourist Association (with name and contact details). The best contributions will be collected and may soon be published in a new booklet.

Consideration makes the path walkable for everyone

Please note: The Kastelaz Path also partly leads over private properties and sensitive natural areas. So that this beautiful path remains accessible to everyone, we ask for considerate cooperation:

• The path is exclusively intended for pedestrians – bicycles, e-bikes, or motorized vehicles are not allowed.
• Please keep dogs on a leash – and dispose of dog waste bags not at the roadside, but at home.
• Picnics at rest areas are allowed, but please do not leave any trash behind.

The trail network is regularly maintained – please help keep it clean and safe.
