Guided hike through the Rastenbach Gorge in Altenburg

An impressive tour through gorges, history and nature

Steeped in legend, wildly romantic, and pleasantly cool – the Rastenbach Gorge above Lake Kaltern is one of the most impressive natural experiences in South Tyrol. For thousands of years, the Rastenbach stream has carved its way through the rock here, forming a spectacular ravine. On this guided hike, you’ll not only discover the fascinating landscape with footbridges, waterfalls, and primeval forest, but also delve into the exciting history of the surrounding area.

Accompanied by an experienced hiking guide, you’ll follow well-secured trails through the gorge up to Altenburg – a mystical place where nature and the past meet. The ruins of an early Christian church, Roman cobblestone paths, and historical excavations tell of a bygone era. At the destination, the picturesque church of St. Vigilius awaits you, probably one of the oldest places of worship in Tyrol.

On the return journey, the trail leads through the Mediterranean deciduous forest to the village of Söll – known for its excellent vineyards and the typical Gewürztraminer. If you like, you can stop off at the historic Gasthof Plattenhof to fortify yourself or end the day in a pleasant way.
