Elena Walch was a pioneer. More than 30 years ago, she took the bold step of entering the South Tyrolean wine industry as an outsider in what was then a male-dominated field. Today, her daughters Julia and Karoline continue her legacy with new ideas and the same passion. A story of courage, quality, and the future of wine.

The Beginning of a Vision

When Elena Walch, originally an architect, joined the family winery, she was an outsider. “I had an external perspective and questioned many things,” she recalls. She decided on a radical transformation: Vernatsch, the classic South Tyrolean grape variety at the time, was replaced with international varieties, and for the first time, the concept of single vineyards was introduced. “It wasn’t easy. Many winemakers just shook their heads,” she says with a smile.

But success proved her right. Elena Walch’s wines gained international recognition and set new quality standards. “I wanted our vineyards to have their own unique signature,” she explains. Her dedication paid off—today, the winery is among Italy’s top producers.

The Generational Shift – New Impulses, Same Philosophy

In 2013, her daughters Julia and Karoline joined the business. “We were fortunate to start with a strong foundation, but we also wanted to carve our own path,” says Karoline. She and Julia bring a modern touch with great sensitivity.

Julia adds. “We let natural vegetation grow freely, avoid herbicides, and use gravity instead of pumps in the cellar.” Experimentation is also taking place in the vineyards: “We are exploring new possibilities at 1,000 meters altitude to adapt to climate change.”

Elena watches these developments with pride. “I had to fight hard to establish myself as a woman in this industry,” she recalls. “Today, it no longer matters whether a wine is made by a man or a woman – only quality counts.”

A Name Known Worldwide

Today, the Elena Walch winery enjoys an international reputation. “I travel a lot and meet sommeliers who have loved our wines for years,” Julia says proudly. Karoline adds, “It’s fascinating to see how South Tyrol is gaining recognition as a wine region worldwide.”

One particularly remarkable aspect is the enduring recognition of the Walch name. “I often hear from restaurateurs that our mother visited them 25 years ago to introduce her wines. This shows how lasting her commitment was,” says Julia. Her mother laughs: “I simply didn’t leave until they agreed to taste them!”

The philosophy of single-vineyard wines has also continued to evolve. “The origin of a wine is becoming increasingly important,” Karoline explains. “With our ‘Vignas’ – Castel Ringberg and Kastelaz – we guarantee clear provenance and exclusive quality.”

The Future of the Winery

With quality, innovation, and a strong family spirit, the new generation carries on the legacy. “We are proud to continue our mother’s vision while also bringing in new perspectives,” says Karoline.

Elena herself is convinced that her daughters are on the right path. “I see that they no longer need me – and that is the greatest gift,” she says with a smile. “They are doing an excellent job, and I know the winery is in the best hands.”
