A varied family hike through a gorge with a waterfall and impressive gorge landscape

The hike leads through the impressive Rastenbach Gorge, a nature experience for the whole family with exciting walkways, stairs, and beautiful views.

The starting point is the Sonnleitenhof Inn on the Wine Road in St. Josef am See. From here, the path goes right up to the Vogelmaierhof. At the fork in the road with a bridge over the stream, we continue uphill. At the next fork in the road, we continue straight ahead until the forest trail marked no. 1/13 branches off to the left.

We climb steadily through dense bushland and soon reach the Rastenbach Gorge. Secured walkways and wooden stairs lead us along the waterfall through the gorge up to Altenburg.

Just before the village, at the Peterkofel, a short detour to St. Peter’s Church with its impressive Schalenstein (stone cup) and a deep rock ditch is worthwhile. The return route then follows the Nusstalweg (trail no. 14), which branches off to the left at the fire station in Altenburg.

Alternative route from Tramin:
The hike can also be started from the town hall square in Tramin. It first leads to the festival grounds, then along the Söllerstraße road to the Hotel Winzerhof. There, we turn right and follow the hiking trail towards Lake Kaltern to the Rastenbachklamm gorge. Via Altenburg and the Söll district, we finally return to Tramin on the nature trail.

When is the Rastenbach Gorge accessible?

The Rastenbach Gorge is generally accessible from spring to late autumn, depending on weather conditions and snowmelt. Caution is advised in heavy rain or ice conditions. In winter, the trail may be closed or slippery. If you plan to undertake this hike, we recommend checking the current weather forecast before setting out and informing yourself about the trail conditions and possible disruptions to ensure you are well prepared for your trip.

Is the Rastenbach Gorge suitable for children?

The hike is ideal for sure-footed children aged 6 and up who enjoy nature and a bit of adventure. The trail leads over secured walkways and stairs, but also features some slippery and narrow sections where caution is advised. The route is not suitable for small children, strollers, or inexperienced hikers. We recommend that you supervise your children and wear sturdy shoes to enjoy the tour safely.

Is there parking nearby?

Yes, parking is available at both the mini–golf course near Lake Kaltern and the Sonnleitenhof in St. Josef am See. Both parking lots are well signposted and offer convenient starting points for the hike through the Rastenbach Gorge. From the mini-golf course, you can head directly into the nature park, while the Sonnleitenhof Inn offers a pleasant place to stop for a bite to eat before or after the hike. It may be advisable to arrive early, especially on weekends, as parking is limited.

What do I need to consider?

In addition to sturdy, non-slip footwear, you should bring plenty of water to stay well hydrated during the hike. Sun protection such as sunscreen and a hat are especially important on sunny days, as some sections of the trail are exposed. Depending on the time of year, a light, windproof and rainproof jacket is also recommended, as the gorge can often be chilly due to the shady and damp environment. Hiking poles can provide more stability, especially on the sometimes slippery wooden walkways and stairs, and help relieve pressure on your joints.
