A Glimpse into the Past

Visit the St. Valentine’s Chapel near Tramin with Jürgen Geier, one of the most extraordinary art sites in the entire Alpine region. Nestled in the rolling vineyards south of the village and located directly next to the local cemetery, the small church combines architectural elements from the Romanesque and Gothic periods. Its greatest feature, however, lies hidden within: a completely preserved fresco cycle, created between 1380 and 1420, which fascinates art lovers and historians alike.

The frescoes depict one of the most detailed depictions of the Passion in Tyrol and tell the story of Christ’s suffering and death in striking images. Also on display are the legend of St. Ursula, the Adoration of the Magi, and scenes from the life of St. Valentine.

The depictions of medieval everyday life are particularly fascinating: scenes of the work, clothing, and lives of people of that time provide rare insights into a bygone world. Thus, the chapel impressively combines religious art with cultural-historical significance.
