Ritten – along the Kaiserweg to the Earth Pyramids

Guided hike from Oberbozen past the Rittner Earth Pyramids down to Bozen

This guided hike combines nature, history and local flavours on a particularly varied route. Starting in Oberbozen, we walk mainly downhill along historic paths and quiet roads, following traces of the old Kaiserweg before reaching one of South Tyrol’s most remarkable natural landmarks: the Rittner Earth Pyramids.

From the mountain station of the Rittner Seilbahn, the trail leads through the characteristic landscape of the Ritten plateau. Historic cobbled sections, woodland paths and peaceful roads offer an insight into an old route once used by travellers and rulers heading south. Along the way, wide views open up over Bozen, the South Tyrolean lowlands and the surrounding mountains.

A major highlight of the hike is the group of Earth Pyramids near Oberbozen. These striking pillars, shaped over time by erosion, are among South Tyrol’s best-known natural monuments. A few sections on the way to the pyramids require sure-footedness. The hike then continues towards the Moarhof, where there is time for a well-earned break.

From there, the route continues steadily downhill towards the valley station of the Rittner Seilbahn in Bozen. Beautiful views over the provincial capital and the traditional wine-growing area of St. Magdalena provide a fitting end to the hike.
