Fresh Salad from the Water in Tramin

Welcome to SOLOS, the innovative company from Tramin that rethinks sustainable farming. Here, fresh salad doesn’t just grow on the land – it also grows in the water. SOLOS uses the aquaponic method, which combines fish farming with plant cultivation – without chemicals, but with a strong commitment to protecting natural resources and the environment.

What is aquaponics?
Aquaponics is a closed-loop system in which fish fertilize the water where vegetables, herbs, spices, and even fish grow. The fish produce nutrients, which the plants absorb, while the plants filter the water, which is then returned to the fish. This eco-friendly method saves up to 90% water and allows year-round local production – no long transport routes, directly from Tramin.

Fresh Salad and Healthy Products
The salad from SOLOS is particularly fresh, crunchy, and free from chemical pesticides. In addition, SOLOS offers local products such as Basil and chives and now also Tramin Wels – a delicious fish raised in aquaponic systems. This way, not only visitors to Tramin can enjoy fresh, healthy vegetables, but also sustainably farmed fish. The Tramin Wels stands out for its tender, boneless meat, which is rich in Omega-3 and Omega-6, ideal for a healthy diet.

The Vision of SOLOS: A Sustainable Future
The founders of SOLOS, a team of seven young South Tyroleans, are committed to circular economy. They firmly believe that their system will play a key role in the future of agriculture. The Solos Farm is an exemplary project for sustainable agriculture, where innovation and respect for the environment go hand in hand.

A key element of this sustainable vision is the innovative way the fish are fed. In collaboration with Reploid Italia, SOLOS relies on a modular system for breeding insect larvae, capable of transforming organic residues into high-quality protein sources. After two years of research within an interregional Italy–Austria project, this approach has led to the development of a genuine sustainable alternative to conventional fishmeal.

The larvae are fed with by-products from the regional food industry, such as apple pomace, potato leftovers or stale bread and thereby strengthening local circular economy systems and enhancing the ecological responsibility of aquaculture. An innovative contribution to sustainability that originates directly in Tramin on the South Tyrolean Wine Road.
