Glacier Secrets along the Lochweg to Graun

Guided hike through traces of the Ice Age above the South Tyrolean Wine Road

This guided hike takes you from Kurtatsch along the historic Lochweg up to Graun. Following a pleasant forest trail that climbs gently, you will discover not only peaceful nature and beautiful views over the South Tyrolean lowlands, but also fascinating traces of a landscape shaped around 20,000 years ago by powerful glaciers.

After a short ascent, the route continues mainly through open woodland and climbs steadily towards Graun. Along the way, you will encounter remarkable rock formations and glacial crevices that offer an impressive glimpse into the formation of today’s landscape. A few short sections require sure-footedness, but overall the hike is well suited to experienced walkers.

In Graun, there will be time for a short break on the sunny terrace of Gasthaus Caroline. Afterwards, the route continues back along the circular trail. If you would like to extend the hike, you can walk back to Tramin via the Kastelazweg.

Getting there: by bus no. 130 to Kurtatsch, Rathaus; arrival at approx. 9:15 a.m.

Return: approximately by bus at 2:38 p.m. or 3:38 p.m. Alternatively, you can walk back to Tramin via the Kastelazweg.

Refreshments: there will be an opportunity for a short break at Gasthaus Caroline in Graun.

Recommended equipment: sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, weather-appropriate clothing, sufficient water and sun protection.
