Adventure in the gorge – a canyon experience in the Adige Valley

The Rio Secco via ferrata is one of the most exciting and varied gorge via ferratas in the Adige Valley. Along steep rock walls, through a deeply incised canyon, the route leads through a wild, almost mystical landscape – always in close proximity to the roaring streambed.

Numerous challenging steep sections, an impressive traverse, and the highlight – the so-called “stone man settlement” – make this tour a true experience for sure-footed and climbing-enthusiastic mountain lovers. Especially in autumn, the route is worthwhile, as the canyon is usually dry at this time of year. In spring, however, it can be dangerous or even impossible to walk the route due to snowmelt or rainfall.

What makes this via ferrata special

The Rio Secco via ferrata runs on both sides of a deep, rocky canyon and repeatedly offers short but demanding steep sections. The segments are well secured with steel cables, brackets, and iron rungs, but require strength, concentration, and some experience in via ferrata climbing.

Particularly impressive are the natural pools, the “Belvedere” viewpoint, and finally the “stone man settlement” in the upper part of the gorge. Short hiking passages alternate with demanding climbing sections of category B/C to C. At the end, a large grotto awaits – the crowning finale before exiting via a round boulder back to the marked hiking trails.

The via ferrata climbs about 260 meters in elevation gain along the climbing route, with a total elevation gain of around 450 meters. For the actual climbing time, plan about 2 hours; the total time including approach and descent is around 3 hours. The route faces west and is mostly well secured – but it should not be underestimated, especially in wet conditions.

Approach and descent

The approach starts directly at the group of houses in Cadino (near San Michele all’Adige). On the opposite side of the road, a marked trail leads behind a small chapel through bushes to a wooden bench – this is where you put on your climbing gear. After a few steps, the via ferrata begins with the first steel cable.

The descent from the exit point follows a marked path through the forest to a trail sign at about 590 m elevation. From here, there are two options:

• Direct descent: Via the western trail (partially secured) with a steep ladder back to the parking area.
• Alternative route: Through the village of Faedo and past a beautiful estate back to the starting point – more scenic but a bit longer (approx. 1.5 hours).

Arrival and parking

By car: Cadino can be reached via State Road 12, about 5 km south of Salorno. At the group of houses with an inn and a chapel, there is a large parking area, right at the starting point of the route.

By public transport: Train to Mezzocorona (via Bolzano), from there it’s about a 45-minute walk to Cadino.
