Tramin's historical religious buildings present an unusual blend of northern and southern elements - a merging of the great epochs of European Art in South Tyrol.
Parish Church of St. Quiricus and Julitta
With a height of 86 metres, this church's bell tower is the tallest steeple built of stone in South Tyrol. In the early 20th century the medieval nave made place for the present design by the architect Franz Mayr, though the Gothic chancel har remained with its frescoes. The martyrdom of the curch's patron saints Julitta and Quiricus is depicted in a fresco cycle on the southern wall.
The St. Jakob Church in Kastelaz
The foundation walls are considered as originally dating back a temple built for the worship of the Roman goddess Isis, "Mistress of the Pyramid". The apse on the Roman nave depicted to the left is decorated with some extremly interesting frescoes, particularly the lower series portraying a set of Roman "Bestiary" figures (human cum mythical animals). The overlying arch encompassing an enthroned Christ with the 12 Apostles and the four Evangelists presumably dates back to 1250. The church nave to the right is instead gothic and portrays frescoes executed by Ambrosius, a pupil under the wing of Johannes von Bruneck.
Opening hours: from the 3rd of March to the 4th of November yearly, Mondays to Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.
Group tours can be arranged and booked by calling +39 0471 860131.
No parking facilities are available near the church premises. For visits kindly park directly in the town centre.
Church St. Valentin
The apse and parts of the wall are part of a Romanesque building documented from 1276 though the church was built in its present form in the early 15th century. The interior is completly frescoed, painted in the period from the mid 14th century to around 1430. The St. Ursula cycle is striking and the Passion of Christ on the western and northern walls is one of the most detailed in all Tyrol, executed around 1400.
