With the presentation of around four hundred top Alto Adige wines and a multitude of events including international guests surrounding the noble variety Gewürztraminer, the first South Tyrol Gourmet Festival will offer a series of highlights to both wine experts and wine lovers. The various wine events will take place from Thursday, June 2 to Sunday, June 5, 2011 in Bolzano and Termeno.

Wine will be playing a particularly prominent role in the first South Tyrol Gourmet Festival. Bolzano WineTasting and the International Gewürztraminer Symposium. The center of attention will be the "Grand Tasting Forum" at Maretsch Castle in Bolzano. Producers from all of Alto Adige's winegrowing zones will offer more than four hundred top wines there. The wine activities will be rounded out by a Gourmet Bistro with Alto Adige specialties, along with a "Wine Lounge" open daily in relaxed surroundings. It willcertainly be especially interesting for visitors to compare the different characteristics of recent vintages. While in the rather warm years of 2007 and 2009, extremely full-bodied, concentrated wines came into existence, those that emerged from the somewhat cooler years of 2008 and 2010 tended to turn out rather elegant and balanced. These nuances in vintage will also be revealed in the thematic tastings; for instance, that of the "Leading Alto Adige Varieties" (Pinot Blanc, SauvignonBlanc, Gewürztraminer, Schiava, Pinot Noir, and Lagrein) or at the "Top of Schiava", where one selection from among thebest wines will be presented with the 2011 Schiava Cup. Both of these unstructured tastings will likewise be held at Maretsch Castle. One Hundred Gewürztraminers from Four Continents The second wine-related thematic focus at the first South Tyrol Gourmet Festival is dedicated to Gewürztraminer. This variety that is old and established in Alto Adige is currently experiencing a renaissance here, producing increasingly high-quality wines that clearly express their origins from the northernmost Isarco Valley to the stronghold of Gewürztraminer: Tramin/Termeno. With the "Gewürztraminer Rendezvous", an unstructuredtasting at Rechtenthal Castle in Tramin/Termeno or on the following day at Maretsch Castle in Bolzano, wine lovers will be offered the rare opportunity to get to know not only the best Alto Adige Gewürztraminers, but also the top "Gewürzes" from around the world. No fewer than a hundred Gewürztraminers from four continents can be tasted here. In addition to Alsace, the German cultivation areas of Pfalz and Baden, and the neighboring countries of Austria and Switzerland, various cool climate regions from the New World will also be represented. One particular highlight will be the organized tasting led by Lynne Sheriff, chairman of The Institute of Masters of Wine in London. She will present Gewürztraminers from various countries that are typical of their regions. A rather scientific character will set the tone for the specialized lectures about "The Origins,Genetics, and Future of Gewürztraminer" with internationallyrenowned grapevine researchers such as Dr. Ferdinand Regner (Austria), Prof. Attilio Scienza (Italy), and Dr. José Vouillamoz (Switzerland). A vineyard hike in Tramin and a vertical tasting will round out the topic of Gewürztraminer. It goes without saying that the various wine events within the framework of the first Alto Adige Gourmet Festival will also offer numerous possibilities for a relaxed get together among winegrowers, experts, and wine lovers. Examples of this include the "Winery Hours" with various Alto Adige winegrowers (Friday and Saturday from 2:00 to 6:00 P.M.) or at the "Alto Adige WineParty Fast Beats – Fresh Wines" on Thursday evening at theParkhotel Laurin in Bolzano. A jazz breakfast with Alto Adigesparkling wine producers will also be held at the same locationon Sunday morning.
